Welcome to my website for the publication of my first book, and future writing projects.

About Me

Born in the 70’s, Mum to two fabulous teens (biased of course), music lover, back working full time, still in the IT industry, and usually juggling the logistics of the family's outside activities.

Loves food (would live on just bread...and bagels...and Maltesers).

Hates Rice Pudding, Lilies and Peacocks (devil bird)

I like to think I'm quite amusing but of course that’s a matter of opinion.

I love writing, which has grown over the past few years. Researching family history has been a long past-time of mine, and I try to do a bit of swimming, a bit of gym (not going overboard there with enthusiasm), walking and a bit of gardening.

And I can often be seen singing in the car.

LATEST NEWS

04 February 2023

This year I have decided, as I reach a certain Big Birthday in July, to increase my little poems and somehow bring them to life more often. Generally they have a light-hearted sarcasm about them, but I have also written a couple, dedicated to family members we have lost too soon.

This was something we had to unfortunately deal with in September 2022 with the sudden passing of my Brother In Law only aged 60. I decided I had to write something for him. He always liked writing poems too; we had a similar way of our words making people smile, so it was fitting that he had one to send him off. Not sure how I got through it looking back, but I did. And it raised a few smiles. He was after all, the Joker of the family.

The more I've thought about it, the more I'd like to do something with them, but it is as usual, going to be down to time. Last June I had a promotion at work so I've been more focused on that these past 6 months, rather than promoting the Becoming a Mum book again. The work promotion, health checks since July (I've reached that special 5 year clear mark for Cancer - woohoo!), losing my Brother-in-Law, playing taxi for the kids, and attending numerous Street Dance competitions supporting my Daughter, time hasn't been in abundance.

However, I wanted to update this website with the above, and let you know I have entered the Bournemouth Writing Competition, submitting one of my poems. I will be attending a few seminars in April at the Bournemouth Writing Festival and also updating my other website Cancer...Me? Really?? which has been an ongoing light-hearted look back at my time dealing with the Big-C.

I am determined to be more... well... determined this year. So let's see how I get on!

It's day 3 of Covid. Two days in bed at first.

I had escaped it, had my jabs, but no, the bubble's burst.

I won't joke about Covid, it's horrid as they said:

Headache, coughing, temperature, wiped out in my bed.

I've kept myself away from everyone in the house,

I only wish the kids could be - quiet as a mouse.

"Mum where is my jumper?"

"I have to WALK to school??"

"It's not my turn to feed the cats!"

"Can I get a lift to Poole?"

No idea, check your floor.

Yes - it won't kill you!

Just someone do it I don't care who!

Get the bus, its cheaper too.

All said with face in pillow, they're talking at the door.

They've made me cups of tea and breakfast tray on the floor.

I thought the days of Covid were few and far between;

But no it is still out there, as this week I have seen.

Day 3 I do feel brighter. I've got steroids and anti-bs.

NHS have come up trumps again, quickly looking after me.

I missing my friends party! Celebrating 50 today!

But plenty more to come this year, just Covid can go away.

I Can't Sleeeeeeep!!!

I'm lying awake

It's now 2am

I cannot switch off

I'm thinking again.

How to boost income £££.

How about a role

To top up the bank...

I could be a mole!

An undercover agent!

Ha! I hear you scoff...

But that would mean running.

OK, cross that off.

How about a nurse?

They're crying out for them!

But there could be some blood (eek!)

Hmm I'll think again.

I know, forensics.

Using chemistry.

Uh oh that means studying

At Bournemouth Uni.

Ill become a street dancer

That'll be fun!

But I'd be disowned

By my daughter, for one.

I wish I could invent something

And go on TV,

And visit the Dragons

Who'd give money to me.

It's now 2.30 am

And all I can hear

Is wind blowing loudly.

No sleep yet I fear.

There's counselling people

Listening, and more.

But I'd just end up

A crying heap on the floor.

How about a Baker?

I could sell what I make.

Oh just buy it at Tesco

And place on a plate.

I guess I could use

My skills as they are:

Writing, computers

Driving a car.

It's nearly 3am.

I'll be grumpy for sure

So I'll continue to think

How I can earn a bit more.

11 March 2022

A year ago today I was thrilled that 'Becoming a Mum - They Didn't Tell Me That!' became a published book.

I'd always wanted to have some of my writing appear in print and although I'm no JK Rowling, or able to retire on my royalties (!), I've enjoyed the process of becoming a published author.

Many people helped and supported me on my first push of the book and at Christmas last year too. From local community support, to independent bookshops, to employers past and present, family and friends and of course everyone who bought the book! Too many to list as I may forget someone, but to everyone, thank you so so much. Lots of love xxx

It's October and I wouldn't normally be talking about Christmas yet. It's too early!! I have to get my Son's birthday out of the way first (which happens to be today #feelingold).

But actually I HAVE to get organised as I'm doing a big push for 'Becoming a Mum - They Didn't Tell Me That!' for Christmas. I decided to go full-time with Bournemouth University on 1 September - a shock to the system after 17 years of regular days off in the week, and what a great time to start 5 days a week - right at the start of the Academic Year! Students and Staff calling up with their IT issues. What was I thinking!!

So the book had to take a back seat. But now it's time to spread the word again. Printed flyers, social media updates, anything else I can think of for the big Christmas push. Time to get working....

8 June 2021

My book is now stocked on shelves! It's surreal to see it, and satisfying to know I've achieved something I never thought I would. Local to me to can find it in Gullivers Bookshop Wimborne, Westbourne Bookshop Bournemouth as well as online retailers.

I am so chuffed to have local support helping me promote my book. An article has appeared in the Broadstone, Poole edition of the The Link Magazines and another local magazine The New Stour & Avon.

And finally, working for the IT Service Desk at Bournemouth University, they kindly put an article in our Newsletter. Love BU!!

"I just wanted to congratulate you on your book. It's brilliant. I have just finished reading and loved it and didn't want it to end. It was so relatable for me and did make me giggle in places. I hope this is just the first of many books to be published!"

"What a nice amusing and heart felt read."

    Mike M

"Becoming a Mum - they didn’t tell me that!’ was a fantastic read and was just the escape I needed in the spare moments I had free when looking after my own newborn! It had me in fits of laughter as well as being close to tears at times. I loved Claire's relaxed and relatable style of writing, it was an easy going read that I just couldn’t put down (until forced by said newborn). I couldn’t recommend this book more, and well done Claire for putting your truths of motherhood down so splendidly".
